Find out more about Berwick’s Future

The programme of community engagement, designed tell local people about plans to revive the social and economic fortunes of Berwick Borough, is being stepped up.

An extra public briefing about the proposals has been arranged for Saturday June 21st at the William Elder Building in Castlegate, between midday and 4pm.  In addition, a series of briefings for the business community will be staged at the new Workspace in Marygate later that week.

And, for those unable to access the special website www.berwicksfuture.co.uk to see details of the regeneration strategy and development briefs, paper copies are being made available for viewing at Berwick Borough Council Offices, Wallace Green; Berwick Community Trust Offices, Castlegate; Swan Leisure Centre, Northumberland Road; The Library, Walkergate; Tower House Pottery, Tower Road, Tweedmouth and Shiel and Morrison Printers, 3 Main Street, Spittal.

A display system explaining the proposals has also been installed at the library.  It will be there until 16th June and on each Friday and Saturday it will be accompanied by an audio visual presentation.

Already presentations have been staged or are planned for Castlegate Area Residents Association, Citta Slow, The Berwick History Society, St Boisil’s Residents Association, Berwick-upon-Tweed Civic Society, Spittal Improvement Trust, Berwick Archaeological Society, Greenses Residents Association and the Berwick High School.

The project has been launched because whilst Berwick has many assets - a rich heritage of buildings, landscapes and archaeology, a wonderful rural environment and relatively full employment – it also faces local challenges such as an ageing population, below average educational attainment, a high proportion of unskilled jobs with low wages and an economy heavily reliant on older, traditional businesses.

The partners driving the Berwick’s Future initiative believe the regeneration strategy will address these issues and over the next 20 years, create create a more competitive, distinctive and well-connected town with greater economic diversity and a more sustainable and balanced community in which people choose to live and work.

Work began back in 2006 with a visioning exercise.  This led to a master plan which was shared with the community last year and the feedback collected has informed the development of the regeneration strategy which is now being publicised.
